Daily FIve- The Daily Five is a student -driven management structure designed to fully engage students in reading and writing. It teaches independence, provides students time to read and write and teaches students to monitor their literacy goals. During the literacy block, 5 tasks take place simultaneously from the children. These include: Reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, working on writing, and spelling/word work. The order they choose depends on their mood, motivation and goals. This structure of the Daily 5 allows children to meaningful work independently while the teacher works with small groups and with individual children.
CAFE-CAFE is based on the most current research about developing proficient readers. Teachers and students set goals, work together, and document learing and growth. CAFE is a menu for learning. Just as we all order differently from a restauraunt menu, we all have different goals and needs as readers. C stands for comprehension-understanding what I read. A stands for Accuracy- Knowing the words. F stands for fluency-reading at a smooth pace, and E stands for expanding vocabulary.By conferring with students, teachers and children place the goals of reading by choosing an area in CAFE. Teachers track student growth. Focus lessons on different strategys fom the CAFE are done in conjunction with the daily 5 in whole group lessons. This assessment system focuses on forming strategy groups and helping each child reach his or her goal. This is done in small groups or individually while other students are independently working in Daily 5.
Making Meaning-Making Meaning is a research based reading program that focuses on comprehension, social development and vocabulary. Making meaning wll be used with CAFE for focus lessons during our literacy block.
